Mathematical Rebuses

A definition of a rebus is a riddle or puzzle made up of letters, pictures, or symbols whose names sound like the parts or syllables of a word or phrase. I discussed rebus puzzles in my most recent post on my Pedagogical Posturing blog. However, in my mathematical blog I wanted to try to create some rebus puzzles that involved only numbers and mathematical symbols.

The following are what I came up with. There are five questions with a blank space in each and five clues are provided that will help in inserting the correct phrase into the blank space.

1.     The number of items in _________ does not total twelve.

2.     John and his brother are always _________  with each other.

3.     You should learn your _________  at school.

4.     The bank had a _________  rating before it went bankrupt.

5.     It's _________  as to what method you use.

Here are the clues:

1 .     \(6 + 3 \times 3\)

2.     @ \(6, 6, 6, \dots + 7, 7, 7, \dots \)

3.     \(13 \)

4.     \(2730_{16} \)

5.    \(2748_{16} \)

OK, they may be a bit lame but scroll down to find the answers:

1.     The number of items in a baker's dozen does not total twelve (clue 3).

2.     John and his brother are always at sixes and sevens with each other (clue 1).

3.     You should learn your ABC at school (clue 5).

4.     The bank had a AAA rating before it went bankrupt (clue 4).

5.     It's six and two threes as to what method you use (clue 1).

So that's my first attempt at creating some mathematical rebuses. My next effort can only be an improvement.
